Description

Professor Robert Lord has produced an excellent, concise, and highly readable introduction to Russian literature. In the opening section, he positions the major Russian writers within their historical contexts and outlines the intellectual, political, and social forces, particularly those of the nineteenth century, essential for a full appreciation of their writing.
The book then turns to three substantive sections: Poetry, Prose, and Theatre, each offering a careful examination of the most significant authors and their works. Notably, Lord devotes considerable attention to lesser-known writers who have only recently become accessible through new translations with particular emphasis on novelists and poets of the post-revolutionary era. A detailed descriptive bibliography, organized to correspond with the book’s main sections, appears in the appendix, followed by a comprehensive index.
