This year Kahn & Averill has elected to donate £750.00 from the Morris Kahn Memorial Fund towards a bursary at the Yehudi Menuhin School in Cobham to coincide with the Menuhin 100 celebrations.Morris was a competent violinist and was encouraged by his family, who were also musical. According to his fellow string quartet players, he occasionally lapsed into the rather irritating habit of counting out aloud! As publisher of the Yehudi Menuhin Music Guides, we are sure that he would have approved of this donation helping talented young string players who otherwise would not necessarily have the resources to attend a school of such international standing. Last year the Morris Kahn Memorial Fund donated funds to Help Musicians. His obituary can be read here.

Choral directors, singing teachers and singers descended on the RNCM for a great weekend of music making. Highlights included choirs from Russia, a great session and 70th birthday reception with well-known composer and conductor, John Rutter and Sing Spem! – a scratch session singing Thomas Tallis’s choral masterpiece, Spem in Alium published by Oxford University Press. This devotional work written in the 16th century has gained recent popularity being linked to the sado-masochistic interests of Christian Grey in the best-selling novel Fifty Shades of Grey – a far cry from Tallis’s original intention and pushing the 1985 recording by The Tallis Scholars to number one in the UK Classical Charts!
At the RNCM, great interest was shown in our books on Poulenc and his mélodies and our best seller over the weekend was Conductors in Conversation by Robert Chesterman. Next year the abcd Annual Convention will be held in Winchester.

It is a year ago that Morris Kahn, the founder of Kahn & Averill, sadly died just 4 months short of this 90th birthday.
His funeral service was conducted with great sensitivity by Cantor Gershon Silins from the Liberal Judaism Society and included music by Bach, Bloch and Vaughan Williams. Please take a moment to read his obituary published in The Guardian. It was written by Reginald Massey, the co-author of The Music of India which Morris published in 1993.
